The dramatic events of the Satsuma Rebellion were re-enacted in "living history plays" (katsureki geki) advocated by the influential kabuki theatre reformer and actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX (1839-1903). Ichikawa Danjuro is shown in the heroic role of Saigo's follower Tsuruta Gojiro armed with a matchlock gun, gunpowder pouch and swords. Tsuruta's armor is covered with a blue, western-style jacket decorated with an embroidered design of bamboo and a growling tiger-a motif associated with wind and the elemental force and rage of nature.
