Bullock Fund, 2002.183 Kusunoki Masashige was appointed governor and military commissioner of Kawachi and Izumi provinces by Emperor Go-Daigo as a reward for his loyal services. However, in 1336, when Ashikaga Takauji-who aspired to be shogun-secured an edict from a rival branch of the imperial family to legitimize his intended capture of Kyoto, the over-confident emperor ignored Masashige's warning about the unfavorable disparity in troop numbers.
