Out of loyalty to the exiled Emperor Go-Daigo, the brilliant tactician Kusunoki Masashige (d.1336) fought guerrilla campaigns against the regent Hojo Takatoki. His valiant efforts inspired the emperor to escape in 1333. The generals Ashikaga Takauji (1305-58) and Nitta Yoshisada (1301-38) also joined the imperial cause, the latter forcing the regent to commit seppuku.
