DescriptionIga no Tsubone (died 1383), shown here with a court lady’s long, silken hair, was renowned for her strength and courage in service to the Imperial court. On a warm summer night in 1347, she went into the palace garden to recite a poem. When a winged demon from above the pine trees responded with an answering verse, Tsubone bravely approached the apparition, asking its identity. Haunted by his failures at court, the ghost of Sasaki no Kiyotaka finally was able to find peace through Tsubone’s intervention.
