"I Am A Man" is the theme for Community on the Move for Equality (COME), which spearheaded the Sanitation Workers Strike in Memphis.Label TextIn March 1968, black sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee went on strike, citing a long history of unfair treatment and a demand for union recognition. Their message was expressed with the simple message "I Am A Man." Local black leaders organized national support, attracting thousands of demonstrators (as well as counterprotestors), and eventually attracting Martin Luther King, Jr. It was the last protest King attended before he his assassination the following month.ProvenanceG.W.
