Label TextThe ancient Roman goddess of luck, Fortuna totters precariously atop a globe, floating on a shell-like vessel, blown by a sail. This finely-engraved plate is the work of Philips Galle, a student of Dirck Coornhert. He went on to to work for Hieronymus Cock. Then, in 1563, he opened his own Antwerp workshop at the sign of Het Gulden Hert, or the Golden Hind. He engraved drawings of Anthonie Blocklandt, Maarten de Vos, and many others. Galle built a printmaking dynasty: three sons became engravers, and two daughters married prominent artisans.On View
