Label TextSaenredam was an orphan in Assendelft when his talent was recognized, and was apprenticed to Hendrick Goltzius. He became a productive member of the Haarlem shop, and in 1589 a master engraver. Two years later Saenredam returned to his hometown, married, and opened his own shop. He continued to engrave for Goltzius, and later for Bloemaert. He softened Mannerist exaggeration into more naturalistic images appealing to a later generation. However it was wise investments in the Dutch East India Company that made Saenredam wealthy.
