Label TextThis key figure in Netherlandish Mannerist printmaking was a painter, not an engraver. Van Mander studied Latin and paintings in Flanders and then continued his education in Rome. There he investigated the ideas, forms, and literature of the ancients and the Renaissance, and befriended artists. Back in Flanders, he provided drawings to Cornelis Bol and Dirck Coornhert for Italianate prints. In 1583, the painter fled to Haarlem, where befriended and influenced Goltzius and his circle. These achievements have been overshadowed by his artists’ biographies.ProvenanceMr. James Bergquist, Newton Centre, MA
