Label TextOne of the few women associated with the cubist alliance Section d’Or, Laurencin eventually divorced herself from the movement in part due to the misogyny she experienced from her peers. Through connections to the Parisian feminist movement of the early 20th century, she painted portraits of women in a dreamlike utopia. This watercolor may depict Colombine, a character from the Commedia dell’arte who is known for her frequent disguises and flirtatious intellect. The character may have appealed to Laurencin, whose sexuality and decorative style remain the subject of much scholarly debate.ProvenancePenelope Rockwell, Worcester, MA
