Label TextUpon completing his fine art studies in Florence and Venice, Modigliani moved to Paris in 1905, where he would remain for most of his adult life. This drawing incorporates a thin application of watercolor representative of the skin and hair of this unidentified sitter. He applied the black contours with a progressively drier brush, resulting in rough, more painterly strokes. Modigliani’s signature empty, ovoid eyes were partly inspired by ancient Greek Cycladic sculptures, nearly all of which lost their polychrome detailing over time, making the eyes appear lidless and hollow.ProvenanceMeyer, zurich; Marlborough Fine Art, London; Mr. and Mrs. Chapin Riley, Worcester, MAOn View
