Label TextIn this self-portrait by Zhang Huan, widely considered one of China’s most persuasive pioneers of performance art, the artist’s open mouth frames a second portrait – a snapshot of himself as a baby (taken by his mother). This most intimate reminder of his past seems about to be swallowed whole by the strained and soap-covered face of the adult male. Certainly for Zhang, this reflection on his personal history takes place within the larger context of China’s rapid political, social, and economic changes over the past two decades and suggests an attempted eradication of history and memory in the form of a “cleansing.”Provenance(Max Lang Gallery, New York, NY); 2007, purchased by the Worcester Art Museum.
