Plaque, made to sell.Label TextIn prehistoric times, Southwest Pueblo women made basketry in a variety of forms using both coiling and wicker plaiting. By the nineteenth century, however, only the Hopi carried on this craft to any extent. The fact that this basket has a handle suggests that it was made for sale, since this is not a characteristic part of Hopi baskets made for their own use. Plaques produced for Hopi use were usually independent objects used in sacred ceremonies. The size and decoration of this plaque suggest it was made as a lid for the handled basket displayed here, further indicating that both parts were made for the tourist trade rather than for Hopi use.
