Label TextPhysician and pioneering botanist Charles de l’Écluse (1526-1609) is best known today by his Latinized pen name. In 1561 Christoph Plantin published his first botanical text, illustrated with engravings. In 1573 Maximilian II put Clusius in charge of the imperial medical garden in Vienna. Later, as professor at the University of Leiden, he created one of Europe’s first botanical gardens. Clusius bred hybrid varieties of flamed and feathered tulips, that led to the speculative Dutch mania of the 1630s, and laid the foundations of today’s thriving bulb industry.ProvenanceJames Bergquist, Boston, MA
