Label TextDe Gheyn’s first outstanding works in Goltzius’s shop were military prints combining meticulous portraits with stylized Mannerist poses. It was a duty and a point of honor for the Dutch noble and upper classes to serve in the militia. Since the fourteenth century, civic guards across the Low Countries met in clubs to march and shoot their crossbows and later arquebuses, the era’s newest firearms. They evolved into social clubs, while mercenaries did the real fighting for rich cities and towns.
