Label TextLethière was born on the island of Guadaloupe, but studied in Paris and at the French Academy in Rome. He served as director of the Academy in Rome, and also taught. He is remembered chiefly for huge classical compositions. Portraits by Lethière are quite rare. It has been suggested that this one represents one of his pupils, perhaps his step-daughter, Eugénie Charen. The girl is represented holding a portfolio, in which a drawing can be seen, and a portcrayon. ProvenanceAllston Headley, Albany, New York [1891-1962]; Hirschl and Adler, New York NY (inv. #1292); purchased by the Worcester Art Museum, March 1954.
