DescriptionOne of Kyoto’s largest festivals, the Jidai Festival is held on October 22. The highlight is a procession of portable Shinto shrines, floats, and over 2,000 people dressed in elaborate costumes representing various stages in Kyoto’s 1200-year history. The parade goes through the city, ending at the Heian Shrine. In this picture, modern spectators with umbrellas stand across from the Imperial Palace and watch the passing costumed participants as well as an ox pulling a decorated cart.
