DescriptionIn mid-September, an archery contest is the highpoint of the Reitaisai festival at the Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura. The contest combines equestrian skills with mounted archery, a popular sport of early samurai warriors. Here two contestants in medieval dress are shown on horseback riding behind a portable Shinto shrine. A long bow is visible as well as quivers containing arrows on the backs of the riders.Label TextIn mid-September, an archery contest is the highpoint of the Reitaisai festival at the Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura.
