Label TextThe greatest guitarist in rock history, Hendrix was a star for just three years before his death. “I want to do with my guitar,” he said, “what Little Richard does with his voice.” Hendrix synthesized the styles of the great African American bluesmen with jazz technique, and influences from rhythm and blues and acid rock. This performance at Monterey on June 18, 1967, launched his meteoric worldwide fame. The climax of his performance was to set his wailing guitar ablaze, demonstrating the internalized fears and frustrations of his disaffected young audience. On View
