Label TextThe most famous athlete of his era, Cassius Clay found celebrity for his unorthodox boxing style and irrepressible character when he won the World Heavyweight Championship in 1964. He refused the military draft in 1967 for religious and political reasons, declaring “no Viet Cong ever called me nigger.” Clay was barred from fighting while a conviction for draft evasion was in appellate courts. Exonerated after four years, he became the only three-time lineal Heavyweight Champion. In 1974 he converted to Islam, changing his name to Muhammad Ali.On View
