Label TextConvicted of rape and incarcerated in 1957, Cleaver wrote political essays published in his book "Soul on Ice." It made him an influential voice of the black power movement. He was released on parole in 1966, and joined the Black Panther Party. As the group’s spokesman he became a powerful figure. Clever advocated urban guerilla warfare, in opposition to Panthers’ founder Huey Newton who supported pragmatic reform. After a shootout with police in 1968, Cleaver fled to Cuba, then to Algeria. Parks, the great "Life" magazine photographer, took this defiant portrait in Algiers.
