Label TextOver thirteen years the "Ebony" magazine photographer Moneta Sleet chronicled the career of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and became friends with the Civil Rights leader. At King’s funeral five days after his assassination, his widow realized that no African American photographers had been included in the press pool. She directed that no photographers would be admitted if Sleet was not included. This empathetic photograph of her and her young daughter won a Pulitzer Prize, making Sleet the first African American photographer to receive that honor.
