Label TextThe Woodstock festival took place in the sloping pastures of Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel, New York. The meadow forms a natural amphitheater as it slopes down to the north to Filippini Pond. The stage was erected in front of the pond, which become popular for skinny dipping. Despite the enormous crowd, inclement weather, and inadequate facilities social harmony pervaded the event. Yasgur praised the crowd’s behavior. “If we join them,” he said, “we can turn those adversities that are the problems of America today into a hope for a brighter and more peaceful future. . . .”ProvenanceDavid Davis
