Label TextThe hundreds of thousands of concertgoers that descended on the Woodstock festival were far more than expected. Sullivan County, New York, declared a state of emergency. In the end the crowd numbered closer to 500,000, and food and sanitation facilities became inadequate. Then came the rainstorms. Despite the crowds and conditions, however, the festival remained remarkably peaceful. Two accidental fatalities were recorded, but there were also two births: one in a car caught in traffic and the other airlifted to a hospital by helicopter.ProvenanceDavid Davis
