Label Text“Operation Frequent Wind” was the military action to evacuate the last Americans from South Vietnam on April 29-30, 1975. This dramatic image is shrouded in misconception: it was not the final flight from Saigon, but the last Huey helicopter mission to the city. Likewise, the craft is landing not on the American Embassy, but on a nearby apartment complex where many State Department employees lived. The operation successfully airlifted over 7,000 people out of Saigon, but thousands of others, some promised refuge in the United States, were left behind.
