Label TextTobey (1890-1976) is often considered the mentor of the mystical painters of the American Northwest. He developed a gestural style, overlaying webs of light-hued calligraphy upon a delicately interwoven abstract field.
“In the Baha’i point of view,” Tobey wrote, “man will gradually come to understand the unity of the world and the oneness of mankind. My work has been influenced by this belief. I've tried to decentralize and interpenetrate so that all parts of a painting are of related value.”
