Back in New York in 1953, he became a freelance photographer and sometime cinematographer, best known for his documentary film on the Newport Jazz festival, "Jazz on a Summer’s Day." Stern was working for "Vogue" in 1962, when he was assigned an extended shoot with Marilyn Monroe. Just six weeks before her death he shot 2,500 frames over three days.
