Label TextStoughton was a captain in the United States Army Signal Corps when assigned to the White House after John F. Kennedy’s election. His photographs of the first family’s public and private lives helped promote public affection for the Kennedys. Stoughton was riding in the media car when the President was assassinated, and was the only photographer aboard Air Force One when Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as President. Johnson realized that the nation needed visual reassurance of the continuity of government, and asked Stoughton to document this moment.
