Label TextRarely credited by name, Taub took nearly all of the official photographs of the American space program from 1958 to 1975. He held a central role in shaping public perception of NASA. Here, Taub captured Glenn calmly waiting to board the Friendship 7 capsule that would carry him into orbit. He circled the earth an unprecedented three times before landing in the Atlantic. Publicity and record photographs like this reflect the sophisticated technology of the space program, and the professional confidence of its scientists and astronauts.
