Label TextThe first crewed spacecraft to leave Earth’s orbit, Apollo 8 launched aboard a Saturn V rocket, orbited the Moon and returned safely to Earth. Its crew, Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders, were the first humans to have a direct view of the far side of the Moon, and to see Earth as a whole planet. When they saw Earth appearing above the horizon, Anders scrambled to load his Hasselblad camera with color film. This is considered the most important environmental photograph in history, since it so clarifies the limits and fragility of the planet.
