Label TextThis famous photograph, with the reflections of lunar lander and photographer in Armstrong’s visor, embodies Aldrin’s playful curiosity. A former Air Force fighter pilot, Aldrin wrote a doctoral thesis at MIT on “Guidance for Manned Orbital Rendezvous.” NASA adopted his concept of space rendezvous in 1963, and he became an astronaut. After twenty-one and a half hours on the surface, the astronauts launched the Lunar Module ascent stage, and rejoined the orbiting Command Module, again using Aldrin’s rendezvous techniques.
