Label Text Richard Pettibone, who had an early interest in model making (especially toy trains), found his artistic voice in the 1960s with his miniature replicas of art by newly famous Pop art contemporaries, including Andy Warhol. Warhol’s Brillo box sculptures raised questions about authorship and originality; Pettibone’s small-scale version of the Warhol further subverts the traditional notion of artists as creators of original works of art. Yet Pettibone’s sculpture has a wit and intimacy that maintains a critical and emotional distance from both the marketplace cardboard container of soap pads and Warhol’s 1964 appropriation. ProvenancePurchased by Mr. Hall Peterson from Dayton's Gallery 12, Minneapolis, MN. Appraised as part of his wife's estate (Kate Butler Peterson).
