Label TextBuffalo reflects the lifelong interest in nature heldby California-based sculptor O’Hanlon. He took
artistic inspiration from stones he found in the hills
around his studio in Mill Valley. Here, the rock’s
contours suggested a buffalo curled up in sleep
with its bulky head tapering to a narrow hind end.
O’Hanlon embraced the modernist method of direct
carving—in contrast to traditional sculpting
techniques in which the artist created a model that
was passed on to others for casting in bronze or
carving into stone. Direct carving favored the
