DescriptionSteel, in very worn condition, with the surface heavily ground down. Shallow, and shaped to top of horse's head. Of polygonal form, with out-turned flanges at eyes, & near-flat between. This area with T-shaped embossing having rounded lozenge terminal. Crosspiece has traces of incised strapwork decoration. On either side of upright is an embossed rib, curving towards center. Above the T is single, embossed lozenge. Lower half is boxish, with wide, shallow flute on either side of sharp medial ridge that extends to pointed nose. Perimeter has considerable losses, but preserves some holes for lining or pendant mail defense.
ProvenancePerhaps from Istanbul later collection of Baron Zouche (Parham, England) from whom said to have been purchased by W.O. Oldman (London). Bought by the museum from Oldman on 1 July 1930. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
