DescriptionSingle edge slightly curved "T"-backed blade of pattern-welded steel; the pattern welding pattern is highly visible on the spine. Blade has white metal geometric inlays full length on 1 face & calligraphy on other face with date 1215 A.H. (1800/1) near hilt. Iron, small-eared hilt with small projection curving towards cutting edge. Hilt covered in floral gold koft-gari.
Label TextThe inlaid decoration on this splendid sword bears the date 1210 in the Islamic calendar, corresponding to 1795-96 in the Western calendar. Yet the outstanding pattern-welded blade and the mellow red-brown patina of the iron hilt suggest an earlier date. Since the inlay obscures the original pattern-welded appearance of the blade, it may actually be a later addition to an early sword.ProvenancePurchased by the Museum at the Morosini sale #3986 at the American Art Association (NYC), October 10-15, 1932, lot #35. Paid $15 for lot which included HAM#s1843.1.A & B and 1843,2.A & B. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
