DescriptionIron with traces of gilding within. Openwork, modeled with features of human face. Oval perimeter is pierced with large holes, & has low, outward plain turn across the brow edge. The holes were possibly for securing hood-like covering. There are losses at right side, point of nose, & a small crack at mid-width on brow edge.Label TextThis mask is a mystery. The interior retains traces of gilding, which may have served to prevent the metal from irritating the wearer's skin, but its purpose has never been satisfactorily identified.ProvenancePurchased by the Museum at the Morosini sale, October 11, 1932 at American Art Association (NYC), lot #437.
