DescriptionSteel bowl with embossed radiating panels, topped by a finial cap supporting a short spike. Traces of former gold decoration, and possible traces of silver around the lower edge. Two disused holes at rear right of bowl, perhaps for former mounting of plume holders at a time when the front was differently oriented (since the bowl is pretty symmetrical in all directions). Three evenly spaced holes around perimeter of finial cap.

Long mail aventail of robust links, flat at bottom and widened around the face opening, with fringe in front of eyes, 29 cm long. Mail alternates solid and riveted links; riveted links have an interior cusp at the rivet point. Links connecting the aventail to the bowl are riveted but are all split open.

Bright printed cotton lining bearing the letters "AH", probably added in the 19th century, suggesting a long working life.
ProvenanceCollection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
