Description3 hinged plates with restored bridle and rein fittings; flexes only toward exterior. Rear hinge is more coarsely executed and could be a restoration. Both edges are roped; inside each roped edge is a recessed band with etched trophy, foliate, and animal motif on stippled background; down the center are 3 raised ribs with 2 plain recesses in between. Signs of brazed repair visible on inside of ribs of front 2 plates, suggesting heavy corrosion and cleaning. Plain recesses have very uneven surfaces, perhaps from heavy grinding. Trace of brazing on upper etched recess of center plate.
ProvenancePurchased by Museum on October 31, 1941 from Gimbel Brothers (NYC). Numbered #B-11 in Clarence H. Mackay collection. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
