DescriptionThe vertical relief is crowned by a pediment with a rosette. A draped male figure stands below holding a bottle. (Kondoleon, 2000)Label TextThis relief functioned as a grave marker. It was found in a cemetery outside the city walls of Antioch. The individual represented is a standing male named Caesianus who holds a bottle. He faces us and we are meant to read the Greek inscription aloud, “Caesianus, free of care, hail and farewell,” thereby greeting and recalling the deceased. ProvenanceAntioch excavation, 1936; from Northeast Cemetery, tomb 3 (Antioch 7/8-Y)
