DescriptionWooden, loosely in "classical" manner. Straight, having cabled edges and recessed panel on obverse filled with pattern (from top to bottom) of leaves (palm fronds?), crossed banners, sword and fasces, muscled cuirass and crested helmet, crossed spear and battle axe, crossed drum and morgenstern, and victor's laurel wreath. Drag fashioned with scallop shell motif and scrolled terminals. Bearded face (Zeus?) at mid-height & grotesque face at mouth of scabbard. Pair of pierced lugs with suspension rings and short length of twisted wool cord. Gessoed overall with black-painted recess. Back is undecorated, and painted a lemon-yellow color.
ProvenanceAlbert R. Louis purchased by John W. Higgins on February 22, 1927 at Walpole Galleries (NY), their # 235. Given to the Museum on July 1, 1954. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
