DescriptionRectangular box with removable cover. Box & lid constructed of thin wood sheet, covered on face with black leather & within with a dark blue fabric (in the box) & white velveteen (in the lid, & on the flanges of box canvas). The box has a deep recess to accommodate gun, & this is lined with creamy velveteen. Underside of box is covered in marbleized paper. Lid is decoratively tooled with running border of leafy tendrils within pairs of lines. Centered on face in impressed, gilded block capitals is the legend: "A UNIQUE IMPERIAL FLINTLOCK GUN/PRESENTED BY THE EMPRESS CATHERINE THE GREAT OF RUSSIA/TO HER GRANDSON THE GRAND DUKE ALEXANDER I/****/MADE BY GAVRILA PERMIAKOV/IN ST. PETERSBURG. C, 1780/****/FORMERLY IN THE/RUSSIAN IMPERIAL ARMS COLLECTION/PRESENTLY ARMS & ARMOR DEPARTMENT/THE HERMITAGE MUSEUM/LENINGRAD"
