Label TextRaeburn was a native of Edinburgh where he practiced for most of his life. His style was influenced by Reynolds, whom he met in London. In 1822 he was knighted by George IV and appointed His Majesty's Limner for Scotland. Harriet Moyn Strachan was the wife of Thomas Renny Strachan, a wealthy Scottish landholder. Her husband died in 1809, and she managed his estates until her own death in 1853. This portrait is thought to have been painted about 1804, when she was somewhat under thirty.
