Label TextThis sword dates to the period of the legendary Trojan War or a bit after. The Mycenaean culture commemorated by Homer was dominated by aristocratic warriors carrying bronze weapons like this one. Mycenaean warrior-aristocrats were driven into battle in chariots, sometimes fighting from them, and sometimes dismounting to fight on foot, first casting spears at each other and then engaging with swords.ProvenancePurchased by John W. Higgins from Sumner Healey, New York on 30 April 1929. Given to the Armory 15 December 1931. Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, January 2014.
