DescriptionGorget is contemporary but not necessarily belonging. Consists of front and rear plates pivoted on domed rivet atop left shoulder & closed by stud & keyhole-slot on right. The frontplate is deep, curving down along its plain basal edge to a medial point. The rearplate is shaped to the tops of the shoulders and has rounded corners and a curved basal edge. Both plates have a neck opening that is beaten up in a low flange that has an inward turn over a wire core. At the sides of this flange are riveted the pauldron straps (that of the right is original). The exterior surface of both plates is rather rough and fire-blackened beneath the later paint.
ProvenancePurchased by Museum from J. Gluckselig & Sohn (Vienna, Austria) on December 1, 1936. Paid $300 for lot HAM#s 2383-2387. Old record states this armor was dealer's number 28, and mentions another "tag 1145". Collection transfer from Higgins Armory, Janaury 2014.
