Label TextFor the past 30 years, Christian Marclay has explored the relationships between sound recording, photography, video, and film. Telephones is an early example of his use of film clips to create an audio- visual collage. He artfully spliced older and newer, black-and-white and color films into a new narrative in which characters progressively dial, hear the phone ring, answer it, converse, react, say goodbye, and hang up. Technology ranges from phone booths and rotary dialers to push-button and early mobile devices. Two decades after being made, Marclay’s video has accrued a new symbolism – that of our 21st-century phone-centric culture.ProvenanceMichael Klein Arts LLC, New York
