Descriptiondragon (Ryujin) with mountains, sea and clouds, brown silk border, lined with a printed cotton backingLabel TextThe hanging was created during the late Meiji era (1868-1912) when the Japanese sought to impress the West with their skilled craftsmanship at World Expositions and with their military power. Since the Meiji wars during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese Wars (1894-1895; 1904-1905) involved landings on the Korean Peninsula and naval battles in surrounding waters, this hanging would have brought to mind Ryujin's protective assistance during earlier victories.ProvenanceMrs. Edward D.
