DescriptionCylindrical, without cover. Fine reed, dyed black, blue, red and yellow. Now this probably did not have a lid. You see it was finished...you'll see that the fine weaving comes right up to the rim's finished edge so this one's probably complete. A very nice example.
Label TextThe designs applied to Tlingit baskets are one of the few truly abstract, geometric expressions found along the Northwest Coast. While men's woodcarving and painting often utilize stylized crests, women's basketry commonly uses geometric designs better suited to the twining process they employ. Although the designs have evocative names, such as "Raven's Hat" or "Flying Geese" they have no symbolic meaning. Rather, the names were devised by the basket makers for easy reference to a specific pattern. ProvenanceOwnership history unknown. E. Charles Francis, Woonsocket, RI; to Worcester Art Museum, 1925
