DescriptionVertical rectangular. Escutcheon surmounted by helm and dragon crest. Earlier coat of arms on verso (catalogued as 1918.143.2). Arms are a tree surmounted by the inscription LIBERTA. Plugged hole below the escutcheon.Label TextThe filled-in hole and water damage beneath this coat of arms suggests that the slab was once part of a fountain. Private fountains were popular in Renaissance Florence as a way to display wealth and status. The slab has actually been reused. On the back is a fragment of the coat of arms of Pope Alexander V, one of three competing popes who held office during the Great Schism in the early 1400s.
