Label TextTurner made his mark as a landscape painter through his ability to capture the feel of the atmosphere that enveloped the landscapes that he depicted.
During the 1820’s and 1830’s, Turner toured Europe and sketched scenes from its great rivers. One of these tours included a trip down the Loire River in 1827, when he made a watercolor sketch for this painting. Turner recorded scenes from the river as he and his patrons would have wanted to see them, frequently including bridges, castles and figures that did not exist as part of the landscape.
