Label TextInfluenced by the artistic patronage of Charles V (1364-80), French aristocrats followed his example and commissioned elaborate tombs for their own use. These grand constructions often include sculptured processions of mourning relatives. This small alabaster head appears to have originally belonged to one of these mourners. Specific representation is a characteristic which occurs with increasing frequency in late fourteenth-century art. Evidence of this trend can be seen in the careful delineation of the veils which identify this woman as a nun.On View
