Label TextRouault was trained in the design and manufacture of stained glass and became successful at the trade before turning to painting and print making. The influence of stained glass technique shows in his later work as he favored heavy black lines outlining glowing areas of color. Most of his subjects were religious or sociological in content, and he turned to landscapes only late in his career.
This painting, which may date about 1937, shows the heavy incrustations of strong color which characterize Rouault's later work. By layering one color over another, he achieved rich smoldering effects.
